Why College Teams are Turning to Social Media

Ward Bullard, Google+ Sports Lead, recently published an informative article in the February 2014 edition of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics magazine. The title of Mr. Bullard’s work, “Why College Teams are Turning to Social Media”, focuses on various social media platforms and how they are being utilized to enhance fan interaction with their favorite college sports and teams.

One of the technologies featured in the article is Google+ Hangouts on Air. Specifically, Mr. Bullard explains how the Google+ College Basketball Community used Hangouts on Air to leverage the “face-to-face element” of ongoing dialogue by creating a “weekly Hangout on Air series, discussing topics ranging from high school recruiting to Kentucky basketball attendance issues. These conversations were watched — both live and via video-on-demand on Google+, YouTube and websites with the video player embedded.”

Mr. Bullard believes that there is a “bright future ahead” in regards to the role of social media within college sports. At Social Media Sports TV, we agree 100% with that assessment. In addition, we appreciate that Mr. Bullard featured our Google+ College Basketball Community and weekly Hangouts on Air. Our goal is to utilize this website along with our various Google+ Communities, such as College Basketball and College Football, to provide informative and engaging content. Hangouts on Air will continue to be a primary portal to discuss relevant topics and promote real time fan interaction.

As more and more college and universities embrace social media, we look forward to being a part of the movement and serving the fans.
